Banana Seat Bicycles were originally called Chopper Bicycles. Schwinn built the Crate Bicycle and the Stingray Bicycle that many in the 1960's rode. These very hot and fashionable Banana Seat Bicycles took on a life of their own. Then in the 1970's the Stingray and Banana Seat Bicycles virtually disappeared from the market. Now some 30 years later the Banana Seat Bicycle has returned. Several manufactures have started producing Banana Seat Bicycles which are similar in nature to the original Stingray Bicycle including the Micargi Hero and the Bratz Bicycle. Adversely, Schwinn has taken the Stingray Bicycle and made it more Chopper Bicycle look than ever before.

Banana Seat Bicycles are a must (in our opinion) for two types of riders. The riders in ages 8-13 and riders seeking the comfort and ape hanger handlebars of a bygone year. Kids love the Banana Seat Bicycle and there is nothing like a Banana Seat Bicycle for Christmas or a Birthday Bicycle to brighten up a chid's face.

If you are buying your child a Banana Seat Bicycle indulge yourself and take a look in our Lowrider and Chopper Sections. We have adult Banana Seat Bicycles that will allow you to ride with your child making two of you smile with that old time family adventure.

The History of the Banana Seat Bicycle can be defined as follows:

Banana seat - A long seat which was popular on children's bikes of the 1970's. The banana seat is so long that a seat clamp would not be able to keep it level. Therefore banana seats require a backbar or sissy bar to support their back end. Riding double (two riders) is possible on banana seats, but is not safe unless the rear rider has foot pegs. (And some will say it is not safe then, either.)

TANDEM BICYCLES

TANDEM BICYCLES

Despite everything reported about Tandem Bicycle riding it will require sacrifice of self for the greater good of all.

Because of this Tandem Bicycles are particularly good when you have children that are at the age between bicycle trailers and the ability to keep up on their own bicycles. Tandem Bicycles are also effective when helping handicapped riders be able to enjoy the pleasure of bicycling. Tandem Bicycles can reach incredible speeds due to the power of two people working together so people desiring the speed of a Tandem Bicycle is another good category of happy riders.

Tandems are not good if you are using it to enhance your dating life or the two riders are of disparate strength and abilities. Inevitably when one rider does all the pedaling it leads to conflict.

Tandem Technique

Not everyone can successfully ride a Tandem Bicycle. Tandem Bicyclist are a breed of their own and racing Tandem Bikes are something that requires experience. Here are just a few terms to acquaint you with Tandem Bicycles.

The Pilot

The front rider is most often referred to as the Pilot. Some people will also call him the captain or steersman but Pilot is most common.

The Pilot should be the person with the upper body strength provided he also has the skills and judgement necessary to conduct the bicycle.

The Pilot is responsible for flying the bicycle much like Pilot that flies an airplane. He must control the Tandem Bicycle including balancing the bicycle when coming to a stop, shifting and braking.

Perhaps most importantly the Pilot must gain the confidence and trust of the stoker.

Gaining the trust of the stoker includes being considerate of the stokers inability to see the road and warning the stoker of upcoming road hazard, gear shifts, turns and the need for braking.

If a Tandem Bicycle team is to function as a team it is important that the Pilot gain the trust and confidence of the stoker.

The Stoker

Probably the most unrecognized job in Tandem Bicycling the stoker is the fuel for the Tandem Bicycle. Also referred to as the tail gunner the stoker is the motor that keeps the bike moving. It is for this very reason that many Tandem Bicycle teams fail. Stokers have the responsibility to work as the motor but none of the glory with directing the bicycle. In addition, the stoker must give complete trust and confidence in the Pilot and refrain from making any weight shifts during the bicycling or risk the bicycle being dumped over.

It is not all bad for the stoker in that having no steering responsibility the stoker has his hands free to take pictures, finish off the sack lunch or provide navigation duties.

The Team

If you can make it as a Tandem Bicycle Team you can make it as a Husband and Wife. Come to think of it perhaps Tandem Bicycle Riding should be required of every dating couple.

Good Tandem Bicycle teams learn to communicate without ever talking. They understand from body movements and weight shifts what is required of one another.

In Tandem Bicycle riding each team member is 50 per cent of the importance of the whole team. No one team member is better than the other. This mutual respect goes a long ways in perfecting the bicycling experience.

Tandem Fitting

Tandem Bicycleframes are simple. You are not going to find one that fits two riders perfectly. Stop looking.

The secret to selecting a Tandem Bicycle frame is to simply get a frame that the larger rider is comfortable with. Typically this person will also be the Pilot and he must be able to safely control the bike by straddling the cross bar as the bike comes to a stop.

For Tandem Bicycle riders it is preferable to have a Beach Cruiser handle bar rather than the Mountain bike look handlebar. The reason is comfort. Most Tandem Bicyclist are not into the sport for speed so the leisure feel of the Beach Cruiser handlebar is most comfortable.

Starting Technique

The first think about starting to ride a Tandem Bicycle is that the Pilot should be experienced. If this means that the Pilot has ridden a Tandem a couple times around the block that is certainly preferable to immediately starting out with two people. Tandem Bicycles can take a little getting use to. Make sure the Pilot has some experience in handling a Tandem Bicycle before jumping on the bike.

Tandem Bicycles are much heavier than other bicycles and will be more difficult to control at lower speeds. For this reason the stoker should be prepared to get the bike up to cruising speed as quickly as possible.

To start riding on a Tandem Bicycle Stand astride the frame, both feet on the ground, Rotate the pedals so that the pedal for your less skillful foot is 45 degrees forward of straight up and Put your foot on the high pedal, then press down hard.

This will simultaneously let you use the pedal as a step to lift yourself high enough to get onto the seat and apply force to the chain causing the bike to pick up speed.

Practice the correct method for getting on and off a bicycle and starting a stopping a single bicycle before ever starting on a Tandem Bicycle.

Obvious mistakes are throwing your leg up over the bicycle like you are mounting a horse or standing on the low pedal and trying to use your other leg to push against the ground. This may work on a single bicycle but the Tandem Bicycles sheer weight will not allow this maneuver.

Starting a Tandem

Pilot:

Stand astride the frame, both feet on the ground, tandem straight up.

1. Spread your feet apart and brace the top tube of the tandem against one leg for added stability. Your feet should be far enough apart that the stoker will be able to rotate the pedals without banging into your shins.

2. Lock the brakes to that the tandem will not roll while the stoker mounts.

3. Stoker: While keeping your weight centered over the bike as much as you can:

Turn the nearer pedal to the bottom position, use it as a step.

4. Lift yourself into the saddle, place other foot on its pedal.

5. Clip in, tighten straps or do anything else you need to do to get ready to pedal.

6. Rotate the pedals to the starting position preferred by the captain.

7. Let the captain know you are ready to go.

8. Pilot: Put your foot on the high pedal, then press down hard. This will simultaneously:

Let you use the pedal as a step to lift yourself high enough to get onto the saddle...and:

o o Apply driving force to the chain, causing the bike to pick up speed. Don't coast to try to clip in until the tandem is well up to speed; it is tough enough to balance at low speed without trying to find a balky toe clip at the same time.

Stoker: Give it all you've got to get the bike up to speed quickly.

Stopping

Stopping technique is pretty much the reverse of starting up, but there are a couple of things to watch out for:

Pilot:

Remember that you have to balance both the bike and the stoker, while the stoker dismounts. The most common mistakes are:

Letting the tandem lean too far to the side, so that you cannot hold up the weight of the stoker.

· Not having your feet far enough apart to support the stoker.

· Not unclipping your second foot soon enough, and toppling over onto that side.

· Stoker:

Keep your weight centered in line with the tandem's frame. An unexpected wiggle while the tandem is coming to a stop, and before the captain's feet are well braced on the ground can dump you!

Cadence

The single largest argument category known to Tandem Bicyclist. Experienced riders want to go faster understanding that slower speeds are harder on the knees and joints. Experienced riders will then work their gears to get optimum speed from the bicycle. Unfortunately this will result in very fast revolutions of the pedals something the less experienced rider will find difficult to manage.

Happy Tandem Bicycle riders will accommodate one another and reach a middle ground on cadence. It should not be so fast that the inexperienced rider finds it difficult to keep up nor so slow that it causes knee strain on the Pilot.

Coasting

Generally less experienced Tandem Bicyclist will coast more often than the experienced cyclist. This can be caused by mere fatique, lack of understanding on knee strain, fear of speed or just sloppy training.

It is important for the Tandem Bicycle riders to understand that continuing to pedal will reduce cramps and be easier on the other partner than any break received by coasting. Experienced Tandem Bicyclist understand this and rarely will you see them coasting.

If you find that one Tandem Bicycle rider is constantly wanting to coast try tinkering with your choice of gears and speeds so that a happy medium can be reached. Remember that the Tandem Bicycle team is no stronger than it’s weakest member.

Standing

In two words . . . stop it. If you find yourself needing to stand on level ground your seat needs adjusted or you need to go to another gear. Most single bike riders stand too much; many very good riders almost never do stand. Riders who stand a lot often do so either because they have their saddles set too low, or because they are in too high a gear.

Tandem Bicycling Creates Partnerships

Tandem Bicycling has gained enormous popularity in the last decade. From a point of almost fading away Tandem Bicycling has enjoyed a resurgence that has astounded many in the bicycling community. But Tandem Bicycles create the need for two people to work together for the common success of both. Perhaps it is this very fundamental rule that has brought Tandem Bicycles back to it’s resurgence. The chance for couples to work together. A chance to grow together in ideas, strength, agility and cordination.

History provides only sketchy details, but the bicycle built for two is believed to be more than 100 years old. The idea is simple -- two people can travel to the same place at the same time utilizing only one bike, but with the strength of two sets of legs. Synchronization, efficiency and synergy are often the result.

Tandem prototypes date back to the 1860s, perhaps earlier, as legends surround the Tandem Bicycle. Stories of cross country adventures and couples eloping, on a Tandem, have kept the fantasy of the bicycle in the forefront for years. But reality says that riding a Tandem is not for the light of heart or those only peripherally committed to the sport. Tandem Bicycles are a heavier bike and require true work to keep lumbering down the road. Tandem Bicycles require that both people work together to accomplish a common purpose and that they show consideration in gear choices, speeds and directions one for another. So perhaps it is no shock that so many couples that start out as Tandem Bicycle riders give up the sport within the first six months.

With the Tandem Bicycle having origins in Georgia it is said that the bike gained it’s real popularity when a newlywed couple had their picture posted in the paper with Cupid sitting on the handlbars. Later, a songwriter added music and lyrics to the newspaper account and the ballad became known as, A Bicycle Built For Two.

From that humble start Tandem Bicycling has grown in such popularity that there are many races throughout the country where couples match their Tandem Bicycle siills against one another. To succeed in Tandem Bicycling the pair must think and react as if they are one. To accomplish this the couple must learn to show consideration for the needs on one another. Must learn to work together and to openly communicate.

Recreational tandeming is less competitive, but the same principles apply. The front rider on the tandem steers, controls braking and must communicate well. Of course, the front rider must also inherently trust that his or her partner is pedalling. The rear rider should also have the appropriate trust to willingly accept where the front rider is going. This compatibility is something that comes by the two riders working together over time. Perhaps it is the lessons learned over time that results in half of the members of the Tandem Club of America, a national group that promotes tandem use, being age 50 and older.

Perhaps the success of Tandem Bicycling is that when you go out riding with your partner you can pedal as fast as you can and your partner will finish right there with you. Likewise your partner can pedal as fast as she can and you will finish right there beside here. After all isn’t that what partnership is really all about.
